Charitable Contributions Cover 60% of the Operating Budget

The cost of caring for the elderly in a manner respectful of their dignity far exceeds the income received from the Residents' pensions, Social Security and Medicaid.
Each year we must raise over 60% of our operating costs.
To cover this constant deficit and to make necessary facility repairs, we rely on your generosity.
We pray daily that you will join our family of benefactors and share the joy of caring for the needy aged. As Little Sisters of the Poor we devote our lives to making the elderly happy, but we cannot do it alone.
Blessed Jeanne Jugan, our Congregation's foundress, went out begging each day to provide for the needs of the elderly who she welcomed into her home.
Just like her we live from donation to donation, counting on the charity of benefactors who sustain our mission to be here day and night caring for our Residents.
We rely completely on Divine Providence, having been instructed by Blessed Jeanne Jugan to avoid an endowment.

Capital Needs
| CAPITAL PROJECTS |

This year’s Annual Appeal (2011-2012) goes toward updating the corridors and community areas in the building where the Residents live.
At the time the building opened in 1979, it was considered state of the art in design and comfort for seniors. However, time marches on. Decorating and life style trends change. Floors, walls, and doorways take the abuse of daily use. The ocean air, rain damage and hot summer days add to the wear and tear. Before you know it, not only does our space look rough around the edges, it has the overall feel of being stuck in a distant decade.
This year’s project is to revisit our interior look and make revisions in color while adding visual interest to create a clean and attractive design. With well-chosen changes we believe we can transform the environment without incuring major expenses.
The future look will be in line with what our residents find inviting and livable. It must appeal to senior at all levels: active adults, assisted living, as well as skilled nursing. We want the perfect balance between user-friendly and attractive.
An additional goal is to create appealing common areas that will encourage Residents to get out of their apartments and rooms. These areas will almost seem like extension to their private space.
We want to incorporate as much of our existing furnishings into the new design program and successfully make it feel as if it has all been designed and appropriately planned together.
We look forward to having you assist us in this important project to achieve a warm and tasteful upgrade to our Residents’ Building that will create the comfort and order of Home for many years to come.

a suitable Hospitality and Meeting Center.

Hospitality and Meeting Center.
We are pleased to report that we are extremely happy with the results. By diligently pursuing multiple bids on each part of the upgrade, we were able to achieve, and in some cases exceed, our expectations while keeping the expenses in line. We actually completed the project under budget.
The electrical system was the most expensive part of the project. This was a much larger effort than we anticipated primarily because of continued expansion of safety requirements imposed by the City of Los Angeles which included adding a second electrical panel.
The Hospitality Center has already hosted a ten day retreat for seventeen Little Sisters from all over the United States. Other Little Sisters have also used the Center for their private retreats. Just this past weekend, the members of our Association Jeanne Jugan used the Center for their retreat.
We look forward to many more proactive uses for the Hospitality and Meeting Center to benefit our order in the years to come.

| Heating and Hot Water System
Replacing our heating and hot water system became an emergency project in late 2009. Our thirty year old boilers and hot water tank were beyond repair. One boiler had already failed while the remainder did double duty. The project took on added urgency when the hot water tank sprung a leak.
Heat is a critical factor to the comfort of the elderly Residents. Because the Home is located so near the ocean the climate is cool and the boilers run year around. Hot water circulates throughout the Home in a continuous-flow system providing heat for the radiators and hot water for the sinks and restrooms.
The new system is operating successfully with the final backup unit soon to be installed. Overall the system offers lower energy consumption, greater temperature control, and lower emissions for improved air quality.
We have raised $187,000 toward the budget of $310,000. Because this expense is beyond normal operating costs, your support is greatly appreciated. Please help the Little Sisters by making a donation.

| In 2004, we began a capital campaign to remodel our facilities to include a Medical Wing and Convent Wing. In total $4,500,000 was raised. The Fritz B. Burns Medical Wing opened on March 19, 2006. The St. Ann's Convent and the adjoining Mary Garden were dedicated on July 26, 2008. |

Wills and Bequests
Gift Giving Through Your Estate
|
Bequests have been one of the most meaningful sources of funds for the ministry of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
Through the foresight and generosity of others, the Little Sisters have been blessed to continue their work with the aged.
As you look ahead, please consider a bequest to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
Estate gifts can be made through a variety of vehicles: your Will, a Living Trust, a Charitable Remainder Trust, a life insurance beneficiary, a retirement plan beneficiary to mention the most common.
The simplest way to designate a gift is by stating:
"I give to the Little Sister of the Poor of Los Angeles to be used at their discretion, the following gift.
For example:
-
___% (amount in percent) of my estate
-
The residual of my estate (after other gifts)
-
The specific stock, property, policy or asset.
Remember there may be tax benefits that come from your gift, such as a deduction from income tax, avoidance of capital gain tax, and avoidance of estate tax.
Planning ahead can benefit you as well as the work of the Little Sisters.

Our Prayers and Gratitude
Your Intentions are in our Prayers
|
Jeanne Jugan always spoke of "our dear benefactors" to the novices who noticed her enthusiastic admiration for these special members of her religious family.
"She told me to thank our benefactors warmly, and that she had not forgotten all that they had done for our dear poor," related one young professed.
Jeanne Jugan had deep faith toward the benefactors who did and would support their Homes.
"What gratitude we owe them! What could we do without them for our dear old people? Let us pray very hard for their intentions," she would say.
The imprint of Jeanne Jugan's faith and gratitude is carried deeply in the heart of every Little Sister who follows her example and encouragement.
"My little ones, we must not merely promise to pray for our benefactors, we must truly pray for them afterwards," she directed.
